Stralsund - Gateway to the East
Stralsund was built by settlers from Westphalia, amongst others, and is located in the straits just before the island of Ruegen. Stralsund is also known as the gateway to Ruegen, because the only bridge from the mainland to the island is located here.
The town's excellent location for shipping made Stralsund one of the most important cities in the Hanseatic League at one time. Today the elaborate residences of the former trading classes and the pomp of the secular architecture bear witness to the erstwhile wealth and success of the citizens of Stralsund. The Hanseatic heritage is so well retained that Stralsund was included in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites in 2002.
At the heart of the historic district lies the Old Market Place. Amongst many other historic buildings, the old city hall is worthy of special notice. With its eye-catching North German Gothic brickwork facade, it has become the hallmark of the city and is famous far beyond the reaches of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the New Market, on the other hand, we find the Church of St Mary, or the 'Marienkirche', the towers of which afford a magnificent panorama view out across the town of Stralsund to the island of Ruegen. Stroll through the cobbled lanes of the old town to the Kniepertor and Kuetertor, the two well preserved city gates dating back to the middle ages.
Another attraction for tourists from near and far is the harbor of Stralsund. Here yachts from around the world are anchored and excursion ships depart daily to Hiddensee and Altefaehr. The Gorch Fock museum ship has also become an institution in Stralsund.
